Home or away
A boat that looks cheaper in France or Croatia has to be surveyed, brought home and, usually, have UK import VAT paid on it. Here that landed cost will be set against the same boat in the UK.
The calculator will take an asking price abroad, where the boat lies and whether UK VAT has been paid, add a survey trip, delivery, UK import VAT and any duty, and the paperwork, and compare the total with the same boat already in the UK.
It is withheld until every line has a cited rate. We hold none of them yet, and an uncited rate would be a guess, so we print no landed cost.
What we can say now: like for like, the same model at the same age asks about the same in the UK as in Europe, so a boat abroad has to ask less by more than the cost of bringing it home before it comes out cheaper. To check an asking price abroad against its model's Gauge Value, use Value a boat.
Tax guidance here is general; check with HMRC before you buy.
No landed cost until each line has a cited rate.

Questions about the UK market
Are boats cheaper in Europe than in the UK?
Not like for like. The same model at the same age asks about the same in the UK as in Europe, across 1,211 combinations of model and build year seen in both markets. So a boat bought abroad has to ask less than a comparable boat here by more than the cost of a survey trip, delivery and, for most boats that have paid EU VAT rather than UK VAT, UK import VAT, before it comes out cheaper. Tax guidance here is general; check with HMRC.
Do I pay VAT bringing a boat from the EU to the UK?
Usually, yes. A boat brought into the UK is normally liable to UK import VAT, and in some cases import duty, unless a relief applies, such as Returned Goods Relief for a boat that left the UK with UK VAT paid. The rules have conditions and exceptions. This is general guidance, not tax advice; check with HMRC before you buy.
Where are most used boats for sale in the UK?
Of the 735 boats listed in the UK market now, we can place 332 in a region: 187 on inland waterways and 145 on the East Coast. Median asking prices run from £50,000 (inland waterways) to £55,000 (the East Coast), but a region's median reflects which boats lie there, not what the same boat would ask: we don't compare the same boat across regions yet.
Are used boat prices falling in the UK?
No, they are level. Like for like, the same model at the same age asks about the same as it did a year ago in the UK market, across 159 combinations of model and build year matched a year apart. The figure comes from archived listings, so it is Indicative. The share of boats that have cut their price is published from 20 Dec 2026, after 90 days of watching the live market.
